Starting from photographs, I make a sketch, simplifying and exaggerating facial features and surroundings.
I work quickly with a palette knife on several pictures at once. I build up layers of paint, sometimes scraping off and starting again. I return to the original sketch and remove or add people. If the painting still does not work, I may start a new one on top. From my starting point I never have an idea of the finished picture, only that it will be thick with paint.
My paintings are mainly auto-biographical, most recently of my children – running in and out of the sea, climbing trees or just making faces. The four faces pictured here are my daughter and friends - send me a picture and I can do one on a commission basis ( oil on canvas 15cm x 15cm ).
